Attention: Health and Safety Activists

The Barrie and District Labour Council is participating in a joint Health and Safety Awards dinner in conjunction with the North Simcoe Muskoka and Collingwood Labour Councils. The event will be held on May 25th at the Georgian College dining room in Barrie.
At that time awards will be presented to selected members who have shown exemplary work in the world of health and safety, and have been nominated by their local.
Please submit any names of members in your locals who should be considered for these awards.  Please also send in a brief description of their work in the health and safety field.

As well as Health & Safety awards, the labour council will be presenting one award per council under the guidelines of the ODRT.
Please see criteria for this award in the letter pasted below…

I am writing on behalf of the OFL Occupational Disability Response Team to advise that we have a supply of recognition plaques available for presentation to distinguished compensation or disability rights advocates.  Last year, fifteen of these plaques were presented at volunteer recognition events organized by Labour Councils and the Workers Health and Safety Centre.  These plaques are in addition to those presented to health and safety activists.  This means more labour volunteers can be recognized for their efforts in the community. The ODRT has one plaque available for each participating Labour Council.

I have attached a sample of this plaque. The wording states: “In Acknowledgement of your fight for justice and dignity for Injured Workers.” The name of the recipient would be inscribed on a bottom plate.  When a Labour Council selection committee reviews nominees we ask that they consider the following criteria:

*        The person’s position/title/role at work and/or in the community

*        Time frame (number of years or time on specific contribution or issue)

*        Any risks as a result of contribution or action(s) taken

*        How this person has shown perseverance to the issue

*        How this person has educated or increased awareness to others

*        Any specific Workers Compensation or disability rights contribution

*        Outcome of contribution to an individual and/or community or workplace

I look forward to receiving submissions from your local.
Please have the submissions sent to me by May 2, 2011.

Thank you.

President Barrie and District Labour Council
