(Message from our Executive Board Members regarding the CAAT S (College Support Strike)

REGION 3 Sisters and Brothers,

Our members in CAAT S (College Support members) have been on strike for the past 12 days.

This strike is important to every OPSEU member and every worker in  Canada.   They are on the leading edge of the fight against union-busting pro-right wing governments.  The College Support Staff are 8,000 members carrying the labour movement flag for millions of workers.   Our 8,000 members are making a just and principled stand against a government employer that is demanding concessions from our members.  Our members will not accept concessions.

We all stand to make gains from this principled fight.  Whether you have the right to strike or the right to arbitration, their fight is our fight.  Solidarity! When our CAAT S workers win this strike we will all benefit.  Issues at the table are being narrowed, our bargaining team has invited the employer representatives of the government back to the bargaining table, a resolve will occur.  But when?

When apprentice electricians do not participate in labs and not handle wires and circuits..
When apprentice plumbers do not participate in labs making joints in pipes…
When apprentice millwrights do not know how to pre load a bearing…
When visual arts students do not know how to use a camera…
When welding  students do not know A before O or up you go…
When our faculty staff run into IT problems..
When the washrooms are not disinfected..
When there is no one to help with job placements..
When students cannot get OSAP or bursaries…
When there is no beer at the campus pubs…
….
You cannot operate a college without our members.  The government employer is trying, but cannot succeed.  If our members were not essential to a good quality education, they would have been redundant years ago.

Next week it is time for us, those Locals not on strike to step up to the plate, and make financial donations to Local 349 Georgian College, Local 351 Fleming College and Local 353 Durham College.  Brother Pete, Sister Sara  and I are calling on your assistance.
Please support your members , please support CAAT S!

In Solidarity, Your Region 3 Board Members

Sara Labelle
Gord Longhi
